Ikea Kallax hack lets you turn £15 shelving unit into ‘posh’ cabinet or ‘dream’ bed

Buying furniture can be so expensive, so before you splash out on a new bed or cabinet for your home, it could be worth considering upcycling something you already own.

It turns out there’s a lot you can do with Ikea furniture, as people have shown online.

Currently, an Ikea hack for the Kallax shelving unit range is doing the rounds, as DIY fans show how they have completely transformed their own pieces into something different – with some making theirs into huge beds and others adding doors to create cabinets or even desks.

The Kallax series is one of the Swedish company’s most popular items, with the smallest one measuring 42x42cm and costing just £15.

Posting in the Facebook group, Family Lockdown Tips & Ideas, one user explained how they made a bed out of the shelving units.

They made the units into a bed frame, attaching bed slats into the space in the middle.

They then put a mattress on top of the slats.

“For those struggling for storage in a small room, IKEA bed hack is AMAZING,” they wrote.

“The mattress doesn’t slide about or off. I have a single Kallax unit the window side so I can get on and off.”

Meanwhile, an Instagram user called @sussexreno showed off how they transformed the shelves into a cabinet, by adding hinges, doors, legs, stylish handles and a lick of paint.

Someone else used two units to create a desk, by adding a piece of wood over the top.

Others did the same thing but to make a breakfast bar in their kitchen.

A few parents have also had the clever idea of turning the shelves into a dollhouse for their little ones.

Each cube shelf becomes a different room in the house for them to play with.
